Concrete gets slippery long before anyone reports it. The surface is formed into wide, flat-topped ribs with grooves between them. Because the ribs run along the length of the roll, laying it along the direction of travel puts the channels in line with the way people actually walk.

The ratings, and what they actually mean

The manufacturer rates this matting Level 2 for slip resistance against ASTM C1028-89 and DIN 51130 / 51097, Level 2 for wear resistance against ASTM D3844-92 abrasion testing, and Level 1 for anti-fatigue against ASTM D3574. Read that last figure carefully: Level 1 is the bottom of the anti-fatigue scale. This is a grip and floor-protection product that takes the edge off a hard floor, not a mat for a workstation where someone stands all day. If standing comfort is the requirement, buy a purpose-made anti-fatigue mat instead.

Two thicknesses, two working lives

The 3mm sheet is a light, economical covering that lies flat and is easy to lift and relay. The 6mm sheet is roughly twice the material, so it takes heavier traffic, resists gouging from dragged pallets and cases, and gives noticeably more underfoot cushioning on a long shift.

Choosing the right option

Take thickness first. Choose 3mm for pedestrian-only routes, counter and bench protection, and anywhere you need the mat to lie flat against a door sweep or an existing threshold. Choose 6mm where trolleys, cages and pallet trucks cross the matting, where staff stand for long periods, or where the floor beneath is rough enough that a thin sheet would telegraph every defect. Width next: 900mm suits a single-file walkway, a corridor or the strip behind a counter; 1200mm is the one to pick for a two-way route or where trolleys need room to pass. To work out length, measure the run you want to cover in metres and round up to the next whole metre, because cut lengths are supplied in 1m steps. One thing worth checking before you order: on both widths and both thicknesses the 10m full roll is priced below the 9m cut length, so if your run is 9m or more, the full roll is the cheaper purchase and leaves you with an offcut for a second area.

Installation, use & care

Sweep and dry the floor first — matting laid over grit grinds that grit into both the mat and the floor. Unroll it and leave it to relax for a few hours before trimming, particularly in cold weather, as rubber comes off the roll with a memory of the curl. Cut to length with a sharp trimming knife against a straight edge, scoring in two or three passes rather than forcing one. It can be laid loose in most locations; use a double-sided tape or a rubber-compatible adhesive at doorways and on ramps where an edge could lift. Clean with a mild detergent and warm water. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, which attack rubber over time.

FAQ

Can I lay it over an existing floor covering?
Yes, over a sound, flat, well-bonded floor. Do not lay it over loose or lifting tiles or vinyl — the mat will follow the movement underneath and the edges will curl.

Which way should the ribs run?
Along the direction people walk. That puts the drainage channels in line with travel and stops the ribs acting as a series of small ridges across the stride.

Is it suitable outdoors?
It is used at covered thresholds and in loading bays. In a fully exposed position, keep in mind that any loose-laid mat can trap water underneath it against the floor.

How do I stop the edges being a trip hazard?
Run the matting the full width of a corridor or right up to a wall wherever you can, so there is no free edge in the walking line. Where a free edge is unavoidable, bond it down.

Choose thickness, roll width and length. Lengths from 1m to 9m are cut from the roll to your chosen length and priced per metre at that thickness and width; the 10m option is a full uncut roll. Cut lengths are made to order, so returns on them are restricted — measure before you order. Order one length per run rather than one long piece you will have to trim on site.
