How to measure — 30 seconds, no mistakes

1. Measure the opening, not the old pane. Old panes shrink, crack and were often cut short. Measure the rebate (the recess the panel sits in) width × height in mm.
2. Measure in two places. Wooden frames are rarely square — measure width at top and bottom, height at left and right, and use the smaller of each.
3. Deduct 2mm from each dimension for an easy fit and natural expansion. You can cut the material yourself with standard tools.
