Comfort underfoot without breaking the static chain

Most anti-fatigue matting is a problem in a static-controlled area: put an insulating foam mat under an operator and you have undone the earthing you spent money installing. This one is built the other way round — a cushioned 9mm foam mat whose material is static dissipative, measured at ASTM D257: 10⁹ ohms, so charge bleeds away to earth in a controlled way instead of either building up or going to ground instantly.

The foam is a high molecular density grade that bounces back rather than crushing flat, so it keeps working through a shift instead of deadening after six months. The top is an embossed pebble wear layer, and the mats are finished with a ramped edge on all four sides.

Why this rather than a standard foam mat

• It is ESD certified, not just “anti-static”. ASTM D257 at 10⁹ ohms — a measured dissipative figure you can put in a procedure, rather than a marketing word.
• It earths properly. A screw-fit earthing lead fits into the mat and ties it into your existing bonding point.
• The foam does not deaden. High molecular density construction — manufacturer data puts it at around four times the effective life of standard foam.
• Anti-fatigue performance is measured too. ASTM D2362 = 33.
• Hard-wearing. Vinyl wear layer over the foam, ASTM 4060 ≤ 1.5% loss.
• Quiet. Excellent sound absorption — worth having in a test hall or a rack room.

Choosing a size

The three cut sizes arrive edged on all four sides and ready to lay. Only the roll has raw cut ends — allow up to 2% reversion when cutting it to a fixed length, and fit slightly loose rather than hard against a wall.

Earthing it

The mat is dissipative, which means it needs a path to earth to do its job. The screw-fit lead fits the mat and connects to your bonding point in the usual way. One lead per mat — they are listed here as a separate option so you can order the right number, and add spares.

Cleaning

Lift it, clean the floor underneath, then wipe or hose the mat and relay it. The wear layer is non-porous so nothing soaks in. Use a mild detergent — avoid solvents and abrasive pads, and avoid silicone or wax polishes, which leave an insulating film on the surface and will change the resistance reading.

Common questions

Is “dissipative” the same as “conductive”?
No, and dissipative is what you want underfoot. At 10⁹ ohms charge drains away in a controlled way rather than instantaneously, which protects both the components and the operator.

Do I have to earth it?
Yes — a dissipative mat that is not bonded to earth cannot do its job. Add one earthing lead per mat.

Does it still work as an anti-fatigue mat?
Yes. ASTM D2362 = 33, and the high molecular density foam keeps its bounce rather than flattening out.

Can I cut the roll to fit around a bench leg?
Yes, a sharp utility knife is enough. Allow for up to 2% reversion and fit slightly loose.

Will a chair or trolley run over it?
Yes — it is a solid-surface foam mat, so castors roll across it rather than catching.

Can it go in a cold area?
Yes, down to −23°C.

What if I need matting for a switchboard or live electrical work instead?
That is a different product — insulating matting tested to BS EN 61111, specified to the working voltage. Call 01282 277786 with the voltage and we will quote it.
