Thickness Tolerances
Extruded PVC sheet is supplied to the following thickness tolerances. Allow for these when specifying machined parts or close-fitting assemblies:
| Nominal | Tolerance | Nominal | Tolerance | Nominal | Tolerance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5mm | ±0.18mm | 8mm | ±0.32mm | 25mm | ±0.83mm |
| 2mm | ±0.20mm | 10mm | ±0.38mm | 30mm | ±0.98mm |
| 3mm | ±0.25mm | 12mm | ±0.44mm | 40mm | ±1.28mm |
| 4mm | ±0.20mm | 15mm | ±0.53mm | 50mm | ±1.58mm |
| 5mm | ±0.23mm | 20mm | ±0.68mm | — | — |
| 6mm | ±0.26mm | — | — | — | — |
Tolerances for 4.5mm and 9mm are not separately published — contact us if these are critical to your application.
Sheet Weights
Rigid PVC weighs approximately 1.4kg per m² per mm of thickness. To estimate the weight of any piece: length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 1.4 = weight in kg.
| Thickness | Per m² | 1000×1000mm | 2000×1000mm | 2440×1220mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5mm | 2.1kg | 2.1kg | 4.2kg | 6.3kg |
| 3mm | 4.2kg | 4.2kg | 8.4kg | 12.5kg |
| 6mm | 8.4kg | 8.4kg | 16.8kg | 25.0kg |
| 12mm | 16.8kg | 16.8kg | 33.6kg | 50.0kg |
| 25mm | 35.0kg | 35.0kg | 70.0kg | — |
| 50mm | 70.0kg | 70.0kg | 140.0kg | — |
Cutting and Fabrication
Rigid PVC machines cleanly using standard woodworking or metalworking tooling — circular saws, jigsaws, drills, routers and mills all work well. For the best finish use carbide-tipped blades with 10–20mm tooth spacing and keep feed rates moderate to avoid melting the cut face.
- Saw allowance: allow at least 4mm for the width of the saw cut when calculating how many pieces you can take from a sheet.
- Bonding: degrease edges and bond with solvent cement or contact adhesive.
- Welding: PVC welding rod gives continuous butt or fillet welds.
- Bending: possible when warm (line bender or oven). Cold bending will crack the sheet.
- Not suitable for: laser cutting — PVC releases chlorine gas when lasered and will damage the machine.
Choosing a Thickness
1.5–3mm suits linings, templates and light panels. 4–10mm covers the majority of general fabrication, guards and tank work. 12–20mm is used where rigidity matters over longer spans. 25–50mm is for load-bearing components, machined parts, spacers and mounting blocks.
Typical Applications
- Chemical plant linings, tanks and ducting
- Laboratory furniture and splash-back panels
- Machine guards, covers and safety panels
- Signage, display boards and templates
- Wall cladding and protective linings
- Electronic enclosures and insulators
- Mounting plates, spacers, jigs and fixtures
- Fabricated fittings, valves and components
- Battery boxes and acid-resistant trays
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between solid and foamed PVC?
This is solid (rigid) PVC-U — dense, strong and suitable for structural and chemical use. Foamed PVC (Foamex, Palight) has a cellular core, is far lighter and weaker, and is intended for signage and display. They are not interchangeable.
Can I use this outdoors?
Rigid PVC performs best indoors. It is usable outdoors but will gradually chalk and fade with prolonged UV exposure, and it becomes brittle below 0°C. For sustained outdoor use, ask us about UV-stabilised grades.
Is it food safe?
Standard industrial grey PVC-U is not supplied as food-contact approved. Contact us if you need a food-grade certified material.
Can it be laser cut?
No. PVC releases hydrogen chloride when lasered, which is harmful to operators and corrodes the machine. Saw, rout or mill it instead.
How do I glue PVC to PVC?
Use a solvent cement made for rigid PVC. Degrease and lightly abrade both faces first. For PVC to a dissimilar material, use a two-part structural adhesive.
Why does my sheet have light surface marks?
Industrial grade PVC is supplied without protective film, so light scuffing is normal and does not affect performance. If you need a cosmetically perfect face, tell us before ordering.
Do you cut to a size that is not listed?
Yes. Send us your dimensions and thickness and we will quote a custom cut, usually from a full sheet.
