The mat for floors covered in fat, not just water
Most anti-slip matting is designed around water. Kitchen and food-production floors are a harder problem: animal fat, oil, brine, batter, trimmings and scraps, all of it turning a tiled floor into a skating rink and all of it needing to go somewhere. This mat is built for exactly that.
The grid is deliberately coarse — small square openings between ribbed PVC bars — so solid debris drops straight through to the floor instead of collecting underfoot where someone will stand on it. The PVC itself is a fat-resistant grade with an anti-microbial and anti-fungal additive built into the material, so it does not soften, swell or go sour in the way standard matting does when it sits in grease week after week.
Why it suits food environments specifically
- Animal-fat resistant PVC. Formulated for it, not merely tolerant of it. This is the difference between a mat that lasts and one that goes sticky and brittle in six months on a fryer line.
- Anti-microbial and anti-fungal. Biocide is in the material itself, not a surface coating that washes off.
- Extra-wide grid. Scraps, peelings and trimmings fall through rather than being trodden into a slip hazard. Narrow-mesh mats trap them.
- R11 slip rating, V10 drainage. Tested to DIN 51130 — the same slip class as our fine-mesh grip matting, but with far more open area.
- Light to handle. 4.3 kg/m² — about 45% lighter than a 15mm fine-mesh mat, so a porter can lift a run single-handed to wash the floor under it.
- Non-porous and phthalate-free. Hoses clean, does not absorb what it is standing in.
- Three-year warranty.
Wide grid, or a fine-mesh grip mat?
We stock both, and they are not interchangeable — pick on what lands on the floor:
- This mat (wide grid) — where the spillage contains solids: kitchens, butchery, fish and poultry, bakery, food packing. The open grid is the whole point.
- Fine open-mesh grip matting — where the spillage is liquid only: breweries, wash bays, cold stores, pool surrounds, and anywhere bare feet or narrow heels are involved. A wide opening is uncomfortable barefoot and will catch a slim heel.
Not sure? Tell us what gets spilled and we will tell you which one.
Installation — it is loose laid
No adhesive, no fixings, no floor preparation. The mat is designed to be loose laid straight onto the existing floor. Its own weight and the grip of the PVC hold it in place, and because it is a single-piece moulding it contours to uneven floors rather than bridging them.
- To cover a large area — butt sections together and join them with connector clips (side-to-side or end-to-end).
- To finish an exposed edge — use PVC or aluminium ramp edging on any edge that is walked over. An edge tucked against a wall or a bench plinth does not need it.
- To stop it moving — in a high-traffic gangway, secure it with floor hooks.
- To fit it — cut with a sharp utility knife through the grid bars. Fit slightly loose rather than hard against a wall, to allow for reversion (see below).
Sizes and how the pricing works
Three widths — 0.6m, 0.91m and 1.22m — supplied cut to your length by the linear metre, or as a full 5m or 10m roll.
Worth knowing: unlike most roll matting, there is no bulk discount to chase here. Cut lengths, 5m rolls and 10m rolls all work out at roughly £104–£109/m² ex VAT whichever you choose. So order the exact length you need — you are not penalised for buying 3 metres instead of 10, and you are not rewarded for over-buying.
For a cut length, choose the width you want and set the quantity to the number of metres. For example, a 3m run of the 0.6m width is the "0.6m wide × cut to your length" option, quantity 3.
Technical specification

Cleaning
Hose down in place with a high-pressure hose, or roll it up and wash the mat and the floor beneath it. For a deeper clean use an alkaline cleaning fluid, diluted as per the cleaning product manufacturer's instructions. Avoid solvent-based cleaners. Because debris falls through the mat rather than sitting on it, lift and clean the floor underneath on a regular schedule — that is where the mess ends up, by design.
Common questions
Do I need to glue it down?
No. It is loose laid — no adhesive, no fixings, no floor preparation. Its own weight holds it. If it is in a busy gangway and you want it positively located, use floor hooks; if you are covering a large area, clip the sections together.
Will it take a trolley, pallet truck or forklift?
No. This is a pedestrian and standing mat. Hard narrow wheels will deform and split the grid bars. Break the run where wheeled traffic crosses, or ask us about a solid-top mat for that section.
Is it safe for bare feet?
Not recommended. The openings are comfortable in kitchen clogs or wellingtons but not barefoot. For changing rooms and pool surrounds use a fine-mesh barefoot mat instead — we stock those too.
Will it stand up to a hot caustic washdown?
Yes, at normal dilution. It is rated to +60°C, so avoid running near-boiling water directly onto it, and note that heat accelerates the small amount of reversion described above. For a specific chemical and concentration, send us the details and we will confirm.
Does the anti-bacterial additive wear off?
No. It is compounded into the PVC rather than applied to the surface, so it is not removed by washing or abrasion.
How do I cut it to fit?
A sharp utility knife through the grid bars is enough. Cut slightly loose rather than hard against a wall to allow for reversion.
Will it lie flat on an uneven floor?
Yes. It contours to uneven surfaces rather than bridging them, which is one of the reasons it is loose laid.
What is the lead time?
Cut lengths are made to your dimension so they take slightly longer than a stock roll. Contact us with your length and we will confirm before you commit.
Not sure what you need?
Send us the area dimensions, what gets spilled on it, and whether anything is wheeled across. We will specify the widths, the run, the edging and the clips, and tell you honestly if a different mat suits you better. Cut-to-size is what we do — the advice is free.
