Entrance Matting Roll – Heavy-Duty R12 Open-Grid PVC, Outdoor, 6–9.1m²

The entrance mat for thresholds that get properly wet
Most entrance matting is specified for a covered lobby. This one is built for the doorway that is open to the weather — the step off a wet car park, the ramp up to reception, the decking outside the clubhouse, the footbridge into the station. A two-layer open-grid PVC mat with a deep-etched diamond-cut tread that scrapes shoes and wheels clean, over open channels that swallow the grit and water and hold them below the walking surface until the mat is lifted and cleaned.
It carries DIN 51130 R12 — the second-highest slip class in the standard, tested at 27° when wet — and V10 drainage, so it keeps its grip with standing water on it. Wheel-and-heel proof, fire rated Bfl-s1, and made in the UK.
Three colours. Two heights. Three roll sizes. Cut to length on site with a knife. Download the technical data sheet (PDF).
R12 WET-SLIP GRIP
The tread is etched deeper and cut more aggressively than a standard open-grid entrance mat. That extra bite is what gives the R12 rating — the same mat body, a harder-working surface — and it is why this grade is chosen for exposed thresholds, ramps, bridges and decking that turn slippery in the rain.
TRAPS THE DIRT BELOW YOUR FEET
Two-layer construction: the studded bars you walk on sit over an open under-grid. Grit, water and leaf litter fall through and stay there, so the walking surface stays clean and the floor inside stays dry. Around 80% of the dirt in a building walks in through the front door — this stops it in the first two strides.
LOOSE LAY, ROLL OUT, CUT WITH A KNIFE
No adhesive and no special tools. Drop it into a matwell, or lay it on the surface with ramped edging on any exposed edge. Cuts cleanly on site and contours to uneven and cambered floors. Lift it to clean underneath.
WHICH HEIGHT?
| 14mm standard | The full-depth mat. R12 / V10, 10.5 kg/m². Take this for a new matwell, a surface-laid run with ramped edging, and anywhere outdoors. |
| 11mm low profile | Same tread on a shallower body (nominal 10.5–11mm). R11 / V10, 8.7 kg/m². For an existing shallow well formed over tile or carpet, or where a 14mm lip is not acceptable. |
Rule of thumb: if you are cutting a new well or laying on the surface, take 14mm. Only drop to low profile when the well you already have forces it.
HOW MUCH DO I NEED?
| 10m × 0.6m roll | Covers 6.0 m². Weighs about 63 kg (52 kg low profile). A narrow personnel door, a ramp, or a walkway strip along decking or a bridge. |
| 10m × 0.91m roll | Covers 9.1 m². Weighs about 96 kg (79 kg low profile). A standard single or double doorway, or a long lobby run. Best value per m². |
| 5m × 1.2m roll | Covers 6.0 m². Weighs about 63 kg (52 kg low profile). The wide roll — a full-width entrance or a double door in one piece with no seam. |
| Wider areas | Butt rolls side by side and join them with snap track or connector clips. Divide your area in m² by the roll coverage and round up. |
| Cut to size | Also supplied as cut pieces to your dimensions, priced per m². Not listed here — send us the sizes for a price. |
Allow at least two full strides of matting in the direction of travel — roughly 1.5m minimum, 3m if you want most of the dirt stopped — and always the full width of the opening. People walk round a narrow mat, not over it.
COLOURS
- Dark grey — the commercial default. Hides soiling between cleans and sits quietly against most paving and floor finishes.
- Black — the same practicality with a sharper edge. The usual choice for retail, transport and industrial doorways.
- Oxford blue — where the threshold is part of a house colour. Leisure centres, schools, marinas and civic buildings.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
- Exposed and semi-covered building entrances — shops, supermarkets, offices, schools, health centres, leisure centres
- Access ramps and pedestrian footbridges
- Hardwood decking outside bars, restaurants, clubhouses and visitor centres
- Marina pontoons, jetties and boatyard walkways
- Station, bus interchange and car park entrances
- Warehouse and factory personnel doors opening onto a yard
- Any walkway or threshold that becomes a slip hazard in the wet

EDGING, JOINING & FIXING
Everything needed to finish the job is on one page — matting accessories: ramp edging, snap track, connector clips, floor hooks and cold weld paste. For the 14mm mat take the 14mm edging and snap track; for low profile take the 10mm edging and 10.5mm snap track.
| Recessed in a matwell | Nothing to add — the well holds it. Aluminium matwell frames (U, R, T, L and J sections) are available to order if you are forming a new well |
| Surface-laid, exposed edges | Flexible PVC ramp edging, 14mm × 60mm in 10.1m rolls, in matching colours. Fit it to any edge crossed on foot or by wheel |
| Joining two rolls | Two-part snap track (2.5m) for a flush permanent joint, or connector clips underneath for a joint you can lift again |
| Holding it down | Floor hooks screw-fix a run to the slab where it crosses a trolley route or a sloping ramp. Supplied with screws and plugs |
| Mitred corners | Cold weld paste bonds cut edging back together. Allow one tube per 10m of edging |
Send us the layout and we will list exactly what the run needs.
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
Daily / weekly: vacuum or sweep the surface. Outdoors, a hose or pressure washer is fine — the PVC is non-porous and nothing soaks in.
Monthly: lift the matting, sweep or vacuum the grit out of the well or off the floor beneath, and wash the mat itself. Turn it over and rinse the under-grid. What the mat traps only leaves the building when someone lifts it — the schedule to do that is what makes the product work.
By machine: spray on an alkaline cleaning solution, run a cylindrical brush machine along the bars with cross passes, then rinse. Any steam cleaner is suitable.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between this and standard open-grid entrance matting?
Same mat body, harder-working tread. The etching is deeper and more aggressive, which lifts the wet slip rating from R11 to R12 and scrapes heavier soiling off boots and wheels. If the threshold is covered and dry, the standard grade is fine. If it is exposed, sloping, or gets wet, take this one.
Can it live outdoors permanently?
Yes. UV-stable PVC, -23°C to +60°C, and it drains itself. It is regularly laid on decking, bridges and pontoons and left there year-round.
Will trolleys, wheelchairs and pallet trucks cross it?
Yes — it is wheel-and-heel proof. Small castors and stiletto heels do not drop into the grid, and it conforms to BS 8300:2009 for accessible entrances.
Do I need a matwell?
No. It loose-lays on the surface with ramped edging on any exposed edge. A recessed well gives the neatest result, but it is not required.
14mm or low profile?
14mm unless an existing shallow well forces you down. The 14mm mat is R12; the low profile is R11.
Can I cut it to fit?
Yes. It cuts cleanly on site with a sharp knife and contours to uneven floors. Allow up to 2% for reversion if you are cutting to a fixed length in a hot spot.
How many rolls do I need?
Divide the area in m² by the roll coverage (6 m² or 9.1 m²) and round up. Rolls butt side by side and join with snap track or clips.
Can I get a cut piece, a different colour or a matwell frame?
Yes — cut-to-size pieces are priced per m², and aluminium matwell frames are made to order. Neither is listed here, so get in touch and we will price it for you.
NOT SURE WHAT YOU NEED?
Send us the door width, whether there is a matwell and how deep it is, whether the entrance is covered or exposed, and what people are walking in off — paving, grass, a car park or a building site. We will confirm the height, the roll size and the edging, and tell you whether a roll or a cut piece works out better.
