Stop the dirt at the door

Around 80% of the dirt inside a building walks in through the front door, and most of it lands in the first few metres. Everything after that — the cleaning contract, the worn entrance flooring, the slip claims on a wet lobby floor — is a consequence of what the entrance did or did not catch.

This is the barrier system that catches it. A two-layer open-grid PVC matting with an aggressive diamond-cut tread: parallel raised bars topped with dense rows of moulded studs that scrape shoes and wheels clean, over open channels that swallow the grit and water and hold it below the walking surface until the mat is lifted and cleaned.

Seven grades, from a 6.5mm mat you lay straight onto an existing floor up to a 19mm brush system for an exposed external doorway. All the grid grades come in six colours.

Which grade do you need?

Rule of thumb: grit and dry dirt — Entry or XT. Grit and water — Plus. Mud — Brush. No mat well to recess into — SB or SB Plus.

Colours

The open-grid grades are made in black, dark grey, dark brown, holly green, Oxford blue and yellow. Use the colour selector above to see each one.

• Black and dark grey — the commercial default. Hides soiling between cleans and disappears into most floor finishes.
• Dark brown — warmer, for stone, timber and heritage entrances.
• Holly green and Oxford blue — where the entrance is part of a brand or a house colour scheme. Common in schools, leisure and civic buildings.
• Yellow — high visibility. Industrial personnel doors and anywhere the threshold itself needs to be seen.

On the Plus grade the PVC grid and the carpet insert are specified separately — six grid colours against ten insert colours, around fifty combinations. Pick the grid colour here and we will confirm the insert shade with you before the order goes in. SB and SB Plus are stocked in black and dark grey; other colours to order.

Rolls or modules?

Not sure of the size? Measure the mat well, or measure the door opening and allow at least two full strides of matting — roughly 1.5m minimum, and 3m if you want most of the dirt stopped. A mat shorter than one stride catches one footfall per foot and very little else.

Recessed or surface-laid?

Recessed — the mat sits in a matwell so the surface is flush with the finished floor. The best result: nothing to trip on, nothing to catch a trolley wheel, and the full mat depth working for you. Entry and Plus also come in a low-profile build (10.5mm and 12mm) for shallow wells formed over existing tile or carpet — tell us the well depth and we will specify it.

Surface-laid — no well, no building work. Take the SB or SB Plus grade at 6.5mm with its bevelled edge, laid straight onto the existing floor.

Getting the length right

• One stride is not a barrier mat. A person clears a 1m mat in two footfalls — one per foot. Most of the dirt is still on the soles.
• Three metres stops most of it. Six footfalls per foot, and you have taken the grit and the water.
• Full door width, every time. People walk round a narrow mat, not over it.
• Scrape first, absorb second. On a long run, put the open grid or brush grade at the outside and the carpet-insert grade behind it.
• Leave it liftable. Whatever the mat traps only leaves the building when someone lifts the mat and cleans underneath.

Cleaning

Vacuum the surface regularly. Every few weeks lift the matting, sweep or vacuum the grit out of the well beneath, and hose or wash the mat itself — the grid is non-porous so nothing soaks in. Brush and carpet inserts can be vacuumed in place and washed through. The trapped dirt sitting under the mat is the whole point of the product; the schedule to remove it is what makes it work.

Common questions

How long should the mat be?
1.5m is the practical minimum, 3m is where it genuinely stops most of what walks in. Always the full width of the doorway.

I have no matwell — can I still use this?
Yes. Take the SB or SB Plus grade at 6.5mm; it lays straight onto the finished floor with a bevelled edge and no building work.

My matwell is shallow.
Entry and Plus are both made in a low-profile build — 10.5mm and 12mm. Tell us the well depth and we will specify the right one.

Will trolleys and wheelchairs cross it?
Yes — it is certified wheel-and-heel proof. Small castors and stiletto heels do not drop into the grid.

Grid, brush or carpet insert?
Grid scrapes, brush scrubs, carpet absorbs. Dry grit — grid. Mud — brush. Water — carpet. On a long entrance, use them in that order from outside in.

Can I cut it to fit?
Yes, rolls cut on site with a sharp knife. Modules arrive pre-cut, so if your well matches a standard size there is nothing to do.

What holds the edge down?
In a recessed well, nothing — the well does. Surface-laid, the bevelled edge does the work. For a cut roll edge in the middle of a floor, we can supply ramped edging or an aluminium perimeter frame.

Which colour do most people take?
Dark grey, then black. Both hide soiling between cleans. The other four are for when the entrance has to match something.
