The mat that sparks bounce off

Put an ordinary anti-fatigue mat in a welding bay and it is scrap within weeks — foam mats melt, PVC mats pit and burn, textile mats smoulder. This one is built for the job: a heat-resistant rubber top that repels sparks and hot metal shards, bonded to a soft foam base that still does the anti-fatigue work underneath.

The result is a mat you can stand on for a full shift at a welding bench, a grinding station or a hot-work bay, and still have next year. The top is a coarse granular rubber with high wear resistance and resilience; the base takes the hardness out of the concrete.

Why not an ordinary anti-fatigue mat

• It repels spatter. Sparks and hot shards bounce off the rubber top rather than burning into it. That is the whole reason the product exists.
• It still cushions. Soft foam base — the comfort of a foam mat with a top layer that can take the heat.
• High wear resistance and resilience. Built for a floor that also sees dropped tooling, swarf and dragged steel.
• It does not go brittle. Rubber, not vinyl foam.
• Loose laid. No adhesive, no fixings — lift it and sweep the bay out.

Choosing a size

Most workshops buy mats per bay rather than a roll — they are easier to lift out, move when the bay is reconfigured, and replace individually. Take the roll when you are covering a whole fabrication line.

A note on what this is and is not

This is a spark and hot-shard mat — it is specified against heat and molten spatter, and that is what the manufacturer tests it for.

If what you actually need is insulating matting for live electrical work — switchboard matting tested to BS EN 61111 and classed to the working voltage — that is a different product and we will quote it separately. Call 01282 277786 with the voltage.

Cleaning

Sweep or vacuum the swarf off, then lift the mat and clear the bay beneath it. Wash with a mild detergent and rinse. Avoid solvents on the rubber top.

Common questions

Will weld spatter burn through it?
The rubber top is made to repel sparks and hot shards rather than absorb them — that is what separates it from a standard foam mat. It is a mat for a working bay, not a replacement for a proper fire blanket or a hot-work permit.

Is it still comfortable to stand on?
Yes. The soft foam base is doing the anti-fatigue work; the rubber top is doing the heat work.

Can I use it at a grinding station?
Yes — grinding sparks and hot swarf are exactly the case it is built for, and the top layer resists the abrasion too.

Mats or the roll?
Mats per bay for most workshops — easier to lift, move and replace one at a time. The roll suits a continuous line.

Does it need fixing down?
No, it is loose laid and holds its position.

What about the dry bench next door with no hot work?
You do not need this grade there. Cushioned foam matting is the cheaper answer for ordinary standing positions, and starts at £71.10.
