The mat for dry floors, where the problem is standing still

A hard floor does not have to be wet to hurt people. Eight hours on concrete at a bench, a till or a machine is its own injury risk, and the answer is not drainage — it is cushioning. This is closed-cell PVC foam matting built for exactly that: soft enough to keep flexing the calf and ankle through a full shift, firm enough to stay flat and take a trolley wheel, and warm enough to take the cold out of a concrete slab in an unheated unit.

Because the foam is closed-cell it is non-porous — it does not soak up oil, water or whatever gets spilled on it, and it wipes or hoses clean. It also absorbs impact noise and gives dropped tools, glassware and components a fighting chance of surviving the floor.

Four grades, from a light 9mm ribbed mat up to a 14mm checker-plate mat with a heavy-duty wear layer. Cut mats come with factory-fitted PVC ramped edging on all four sides — drop it down and it is finished, with no separate edging to buy or weld.

Why foam rather than an open-grid mat

• It is built for comfort first. Open-grid mats are drainage products that happen to be springy. This is a cushion that happens to be slip resistant — a different job, and the right one on a dry floor.
• Nothing falls through it. A solid surface at a bench means dropped screws, components and hand tools stay where you can see them.
• It protects what you drop. The foam takes the impact instead of the part, the glass or the floor.
• It is quiet. Excellent sound absorption — noticeable in a packing hall or a bottling line where hard-floor clatter runs all day.
• It is warm. Closed-cell foam insulates the operator from a cold slab far better than a thin open mat.
• It is light. 3.3–4 kg/m². A 0.91 × 3m mat is a one-person lift; the small mats post out in a box.

Which grade do you need?

If you are not sure between the 9mm and the 14mm: 9mm is right where people move about and the mat gets lifted often; 14mm is right where one person stands in one place for a full shift.

Cut mats or a roll?

Cut mats (0.6 × 0.91m, 0.91 × 1.5m, 0.91 × 3m) are supplied with factory-fitted PVC ramped edging on all four sides. They are finished on arrival — nothing to trim, edge or weld. The two smaller sizes go out by parcel carrier rather than on a pallet, so a single workstation mat is quick and cheap to get to site.

The 18m × 0.91m roll is for continuous runs — a full bench line, a gangway, a pick face. It cuts to length on site with a sharp knife. Cut ends are raw, so where a cut edge lands in a walked-over route, finish it with ramped edging from our accessories page.

Rough rule: up to three workstations, buy mats. More than that in a line, buy the roll.

Wider than 0.91m? Lay two runs side by side. Allow up to 2% reversion when cutting a roll to a fixed length — fit slightly loose rather than hard against a wall.

Standing water and wheeled routes

This is a solid-surface cushion for dry and occasionally damp floors — it takes a spill and wipes clean, and trolleys and pallet trucks run over it without catching.

Where a floor is wet all day, a draining mat will serve you better, and we stock those too:

• 15mm fine open mesh — breweries, wash bays, cold stores, poolside. R11, V10.
• 15mm wide open grid — kitchens, butchery, fish and bakery, where the spillage carries solids.
• 10mm open rib — the draining equivalent of this mat, for damp workshop floors.

Edging, joining and fixing

Cut mats arrive edged on all four sides, so most orders need nothing else. For roll installations, everything is on one page — matting accessories: ramp edging, snap track, connector clips, floor hooks and cold weld paste.

• Cut edges in a walkway — fit PVC ramped edging. Take the 10mm low-profile for the 9mm grades and the 14mm for the 14mm grades.
• Butting two runs — snap track for a flush permanent joint, or connector clips for one you can lift again.
• Holding a run down — floor hooks screw-fix into the slab in a busy gangway.
• Mitred corners — cold weld paste bonds cut edging so the corner does not lift.

Cleaning

Lift it, sweep or hose the floor underneath, then wipe or hose the mat and put it back. The closed-cell surface is non-porous, so nothing soaks in. A mild alkaline cleaner at the dilution its manufacturer specifies is fine; the 14mm checker-plate grade takes a high-pressure hose. Avoid solvents and abrasive pads on the wear layer.

Common questions

Do the cut mats really come edged?
Yes — all three cut sizes are supplied with factory-fitted PVC ramped edging to four sides. Only the 18m roll has raw cut ends.

Which grade for a retail till?
The 14mm pebble. One person, one spot, all day — that is the case the extra cushioning is for, and the wear layer copes with a till point being the most walked-on square metre in the shop.

Which grade for a machine shop?
The 14mm checker plate. The tread pattern adds grip where there is a film of coolant or oil underfoot, and the wear layer resists swarf and dropped tooling.

Can a pallet truck or trolley cross it?
Yes. It is a solid-surface mat, so wheels roll over it rather than catching. On a route crossed constantly, use the 14mm grades and edge any cut ends.

Will it stand up to oil and coolant?
Yes — the closed-cell PVC is non-porous and does not absorb them. For a specific coolant or concentrated chemical, send us the product and we will confirm.

Can it go in a cold store or an unheated unit?
Yes, down to −23°C, and the foam makes a real difference standing on a cold slab. For colder than that, ask us.

How do I cut the roll to length?
A sharp utility knife against a straight edge. Cut slightly loose rather than hard against a wall to allow for up to 2% reversion.

Does it need gluing down?
No. It is loose laid and holds its own position. In a busy gangway, edge it and use floor hooks.

Is the yellow safety edge painted on?
No — it is moulded into the mat as an integral band down both long sides, so it cannot wear off or peel.
