The entrance mat that takes the water as well as the grit
An open-grid scraper mat stops the grit. It does not stop the water. On a polished reception floor or a supermarket aisle, the water is the slip claim, and it walks in on wet soles long after the grit has been scraped off.
This is the grade built for that. The same two-layer open-grid PVC construction as our standard entrance matting, with a diamond-cut tread on every raised bar, but between the bars sit strips of absorbent polyamide carpet. The bars scrape. The carpet dries. The open grid underneath holds the grit and the drained water below the walking surface until the mat is lifted.
16mm deep, or 12mm low profile for a shallow well. R11 slip rated, wheel-and-heel proof. Five colours. Supplied as 10m rolls in two widths, cut to length on site.
SCRAPE, ABSORB, TRAP
Three actions on every footfall. The ribbed PVC bars scrape the sole clean. The carpet strip beside each bar takes the moisture off the shoe and holds it. Grit and drained water drop through to the open grid beneath, out of the traffic.
HEAVY COMMERCIAL CARPET INSERT
The insert is a 100% regenerated polyamide pile rated EN 1307 class 33, commercial heavy, on a waterproof vinyl backing. It is the same wear class as airport and retail carpet, cut into strips and set between the bars.
LOOSE LAY, ROLL OUT, CUT WITH A KNIFE
No adhesive and no special tools. Drop it into a matwell, or lay it on the surface with ramped edging on any exposed edge. Cuts on site and contours to uneven floors. Lift it to clean underneath.

Rule of thumb: if you are cutting a new well or laying on the surface, take 16mm. Only drop to low profile when the well you already have forces it.

Allow at least two full strides of matting in the direction of travel, roughly 1.5m minimum and 3m if you want most of the water and dirt stopped, and always the full width of the opening. On a long run, put the open-grid scraper grade at the outside and this carpet-insert grade behind it.
COLOURS
The PVC grid comes in five colours, each supplied here with a tone-matched carpet insert. Use the colour selector above to see each one in place.
- Black and dark grey — the commercial default. Hide soiling between cleans and sit quietly against most floor finishes.
- Dark brown — warmer, for stone, timber and heritage entrances.
- Oxford blue and holly green — where the entrance is part of a house colour. Schools, leisure centres and civic buildings.
The carpet insert is also made in ten shades, including flecked basalt, slate and sandstone, and can be paired with any grid colour for around fifty combinations. Pick the grid colour here and tell us if you want a different insert shade; we will confirm it before the order goes in.

EDGING, JOINING & FIXING
Everything needed to finish the job is on one page — matting accessories: ramp edging, snap track, connector clips, floor hooks and cold weld paste. For the 16mm mat take the 14mm edging and snap track; for low profile take the 10mm edging and 10.5mm snap track.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
Daily: vacuum the carpet strips as part of the normal round. An upright with a beater bar lifts the pile and pulls the fine dust out.
Weekly to monthly: lift or roll back the matting, sweep or vacuum the grit out of the well beneath, and lay it back. What the mat traps only leaves the building when someone lifts it.
Periodic wet clean: hot water extraction or a spray-extraction machine on the carpet strips, as for any commercial carpet. Allow to dry before relaying. The PVC grid can be hosed or washed with an alkaline cleaner.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is this different from the standard open-grid mat?
Same grid, same bars, same slip rating. This one adds carpet strips between the bars to absorb water. If the problem is grit, take the open-grid mat. If the floor beyond the mat is wet and slippery after the grit has been dealt with, take this one.
Can it go outside?
It is designed for internal and covered entrances. For an exposed threshold that gets rained on, use the R12 outdoor grade at the outside and this mat inside the door.
People arrive genuinely muddy — is there something more aggressive?
Yes. The brush insert grade adds nylon bristle strips between the bars to scrub the sides of boots as well as the soles. Put it outside the door and this mat inside.
Will trolleys, wheelchairs and heels cross it?
Yes — wheel-and-heel proof, and it conforms to BS 8300:2009 for accessible entrances. Castors run on the bars, not the carpet.
Do I need a matwell?
No. It loose-lays on the surface with ramped edging on any exposed edge. A recessed well gives the neatest result.
16mm or low profile?
16mm unless an existing shallow well forces you down.
Can I cut it to fit?
Yes. It cuts on site with a sharp knife, through the bars and the carpet alike. Allow up to 2% for reversion if cutting to a fixed length in a hot spot.
Can I have a different carpet colour, or a logo?
Yes. The insert is made in ten shades, and a logo panel can be die-cut into the run. Neither is listed here, so get in touch and we will price it.
How many rolls do I need?
Divide the area in m² by the roll coverage (6 m² or 9.1 m²) and round up. Rolls butt side by side and join with snap track or clips.
