The entrance mat for mud, snow and site boots
An open-grid mat scrapes the sole. It does nothing for the sides of a boot, and on a wet site, a playing field or a farm track the mud is on the sides. That is the job of this grade.
The same two-layer open-grid PVC construction as our standard entrance matting, with a diamond-cut tread on every raised bar, but between the bars sit rows of stiff Nylon 6.6 bristles. The bars scrape the sole. The bristles scrub the welt, the sides and the tread pattern. Mud, gravel, salt and snow fall through the open grid and stay below the walking surface until the mat is lifted.
Two grids: standard, with closely spaced bars for the heaviest scrubbing, and wide, with bigger openings that let stones, snow and ice drop straight through. Slip resistant, wheel-and-heel proof. Black or dark grey. Supplied as 10m rolls in two widths, cut to length on site and fitted flush in a matwell.
SCRAPE, SCRUB, TRAP
The ribbed PVC bars scrape the sole on every footfall. The bristle strips beside each bar work the sides and the tread. Everything that comes off drops through to the open grid beneath, out of the traffic.
BUILT FOR THE OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR
Flexible PVC grid and nylon bristles, both unaffected by rain, frost, salt and sun. Recess it in the threshold matwell, in a porch or at a site cabin door and let it take the weather.
RECESS IT, ROLL IT OUT, CUT WITH A KNIFE
No adhesive and no special tools. Drop it into a 14mm matwell so the grid finishes flush with the paving and the bristles stand proud; where there is no well, lay it on the surface with ramped edging. Cuts on site and contours to uneven ground. Lift it or roll it back to clean underneath.
WHICH GRID?
| Standard grid | Closely spaced bars with a bristle strip between every pair. The most scrubbing per stride. 12.7 kg/m². Take this for mud, wet grass and site boots: schools, sports pavilions, farm shops, construction site cabins, factory and warehouse personnel doors. |
| Wide grid | Bars spaced further apart with larger openings between them. Lighter at 7.8 kg/m² and lets gravel, salt, snow and ice fall straight through rather than sitting on the surface. Take this for winter thresholds, gravel approaches, coastal and rural sites, and anywhere the debris is bigger than mud. |
Rule of thumb: mud, take standard. Stones and snow, take wide. Many sites swap to the wide grid for the winter months and back to standard or an open-grid mat for the summer; the rolls are interchangeable in the same well.

Allow at least two full strides of matting in the direction of travel, roughly 1.5m minimum and 3m if you want most of the mud stopped, and always the full width of the opening. On a long run, put this brush grade at the outside and an open-grid or carpet-insert grade inside the door to finish the job.
COLOURS
Two stock colours for the PVC grid. Use the colour selector above to see each one in place.
- Black — the outdoor default. Hides the soiling that this mat is designed to collect.
- Dark grey — sits more quietly against light paving, stone and aluminium door frames.
Bristle colour is confirmed with your order. Other grid colours are made to order for larger projects; ask before you specify.

EDGING, JOINING & FIXING
Everything needed to finish the job is on one page — matting accessories: ramp edging, snap track, connector clips, floor hooks and cold weld paste. Take the 14mm frames, edging and snap track; the bristles stand above the frame and that is by design.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
Routine: sweep or hose the surface. A stiff broom run along the bars clears the bristle strips; a pressure washer clears them faster. The PVC and nylon are non-porous and do not hold soiling.
Periodic: lift or roll back the matting, shovel or sweep out the mud and grit from the well beneath, hose the underside and lay it back. On a busy site in winter that is a weekly job; on an office threshold, monthly.
Salt and de-icer: hose through after the thaw. Neither the grid nor the bristles are affected by road salt, but the residue is best washed out of the well.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is this different from the standard open-grid mat?
Same grid, same bars. This one adds nylon bristle strips between the bars to scrub the sides of footwear, and it is the grade to take when people arrive genuinely muddy. If the problem is grit and water rather than mud, the open-grid mat is cheaper and does that job.
Standard or wide grid?
Mud and wet grass, standard. Stones, gravel, salt, snow and ice, wide. If you cannot decide, tell us what is outside the door.
Can it go outside?
Yes. It is designed for external and semi-covered thresholds and takes rain, frost, salt and sun without degrading.
Will trolleys, wheelchairs and heels cross it?
Yes — wheel-and-heel proof, and it conforms to BS 8300:2009 for accessible entrances. Castors and heels run on the bars.
Do I need a matwell?
A recessed well is the standard installation and gives a flush threshold with nothing to trip on. Where there is no well, it can be surface-laid with ramped edging on any exposed edge.
How deep should the well be?
14mm, to the top of the grid bars. The bristles stand above the bars and above the well by design.
Is there a slip rating?
The manufacturer classifies the brush grades as slip resistant but publishes no DIN 51130 R-value for them; the 14mm open-grid base mat they are built on is rated R11. If a tender needs a test figure, tell us and we will request it.
Can I cut it to fit?
Yes. It cuts on site with a sharp knife along a channel between the bars. Allow up to 2% for reversion if cutting to a fixed length in a hot spot.
How many rolls do I need?
Divide the area in m² by the roll coverage (6 m² or 9.1 m²) and round up. Rolls butt side by side and join with snap track or clips.
