A safe route across a roof, without touching the membrane

Maintenance traffic is what damages flat roofs. Every visit to a plant unit, a solar array or an AHU puts boots, ladders and toolboxes onto a single-ply membrane that was never meant to be walked on. This is the walkway that goes down first: an open-lattice PVC runner, 14mm high, laid loose along the access route so people walk on the matting and not the roof.

It is a two-layer moulding — cross-ribbed top bars with a deep-cut grip pattern, sitting on channelled underbars. Water runs away beneath it rather than sitting on it, so the walking surface stays drained through rain, dew and meltwater, and the roof beneath keeps draining normally too.

It is not only a roof product. The same lattice is the right answer for any wet floor where you want a defined, drained route — plant rooms, wash-down areas, pontoons and pool plant.

Two grades

If the walkway is going onto an exposed roof and you want it to still be doing its job in a decade, take the 20/20. For an internal plant room the standard grade is enough.

Why it suits roofs specifically

• It protects the membrane. A flexible one-piece moulding that contours to the roof structure and spreads foot traffic instead of concentrating it.
• It stays put in wind. Stable in winds up to 60 mph laid loose — no fixings, no penetrations, nothing screwed through a waterproof layer.
• R11 slip rated to DIN 51130, with cross-directional top ribs that grip in the wet.
• Four-way drainage (V10) on the 20/20 grade — water leaves the walkway in every direction rather than pooling along it.
• It rolls up. Lift it when the roof needs inspecting or recoating, then roll it back out.
• UV stable. Built to sit outside permanently.

Choosing a width

Runs longer than 10m butt end to end. Cut to length on site with a sharp knife — allow up to 2% reversion and fit slightly loose rather than hard against an upstand.

Laying it on a roof

• Follow the route people actually take — hatch to plant, not wall to wall. A 0.91m run along the true desire line beats a wide mat in the wrong place.
• Lay it loose. Nothing is fixed, screwed or bonded, so the waterproof layer stays intact and the roofing guarantee is undisturbed.
• Keep outlets clear. The lattice drains through, but do not bury a rainwater outlet under a join — break the run around it.
• Butt, do not overlap. Overlaps create a trip edge; butted ends sit flush.
• Lift it at inspection. Roll it back, check the membrane underneath, roll it out again.

Cleaning

Hose it in place, or roll it up and jet-wash both the matting and the surface underneath. Non-porous PVC — nothing soaks in. On a roof, clearing leaf litter from under the run once or twice a year keeps the drainage working.

Common questions

Will it damage my roof membrane?
No — protecting it is the point. It is a flexible one-piece moulding laid loose, with no fixings and nothing sharp, and it spreads foot traffic that would otherwise land directly on the membrane.

Will it blow off?
It is stable laid loose in winds up to 60 mph. For exposed high-level roofs above that, call 01282 277786 and we will talk through ballasting or bonded options.

Which colour for a roof?
Yellow, almost always. It marks the route clearly against a dark membrane and stays visible in poor light. Light grey suits a visible roof where appearance matters.

Standard or 20/20?
Outdoors and exposed, take the 20/20 for the four-way drainage, deeper grip cut and better UV weatherability. Internally, standard is fine.

Can I use it indoors in a wet plant room?
Yes — that is one of its best uses. R11 and free draining, and it lifts for cleaning.

How do I cut it?
A sharp utility knife through the bars. Cut slightly loose against an upstand to allow for reversion.

Do I need edging?
On a roof, no — nobody is crossing the edge at speed. On an internal walkway crossed on foot, edge it with ramped trim from our matting accessories page.
